Ordinary Heat Fatigue
You are tired, your thinking is clear, and nothing else is wrong. You want a cold drink and twenty minutes in the air conditioning. This is the common case and it resolves on its own with shade, fluids, and rest.
Dehydration
Thirst, dark urine, reduced output, headache, and dizziness on standing are the signals. Thirst lags behind actual fluid loss, so by the time you notice it you are already behind. Dehydration and heat fatigue often happen together, which is part of why they get confused.
Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion has a distinct presentation: heavy sweating with cool, clammy skin, a weak and rapid pulse, low blood pressure on standing, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, headache, extreme thirst, and mild confusion, per the Mayo Clinic. Get out of the heat and cool down immediately. If symptoms persist beyond 30 minutes of self-treatment, go to the nearest emergency room. Untreated heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke.
Heat Stroke Is a 911 Call
Call 911 if the person faints, becomes agitated or confused, has a seizure, cannot drink, or has a core body temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. That is heat stroke and it is life-threatening. Do not drive to a clinic, do not wait to see if it improves, and do not treat it with fluids at home. IV hydration is supportive care, not emergency care, and it is not an alternative to an emergency room in this situation.
When the Heat Is Not the Reason You Are Tired

Fatigue That Does Not Lift When You Cool Down

If you spend a full day in air conditioning, drink normally, sleep, and still wake up exhausted, the heat is not what you are dealing with.
